Mighty Thor #1 Blank Variant Books Reviews

  • I loved Thor The World Eaters, so I was eager to start this new Thro series from Fraction. Since he didn’t want to bog the book down with the baggage of continuity, the story is very much stand alone.

I really don’t like Galactus. I find him a very boring, one dimensional villain. Never-the-less, Fraction manages to make the story engaging because Odin is considered one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe – so what happens when these two butt heads? There was plenty of action, particularly as Thor tests his might against the Silver Surfer, and a good bit of humor. When Loki breaks into Sif’s chambers to steal a lock of her hair, the scene is laugh out loud funny. I also love the way her and Thor’s relationship is portrayed. And who doesn't enjoy seeing Loki get into mischief? And this time he’s doing it to save Thor. The story has some strong emotional beats and moved at a good pace.

Overall, this is a solid start to the post-Siege series that has me eager to continue. Plus, I love the movie tie-in cover on the hardcover release. Recommended.
  • (4.5 stars)
Matt Fraction's epic story and Oliver Coipel's stunning art combine to make this a great Thor story, though admittedly I had a bit of trouble jumping in here, having largely ignored the run due to the sub-par reactions to the Siege and World Eater's story arcs. To its credit, the book actually fills readers in on the important events in a little pre-story page explaining what has happened since Latverian Prometheus during `Siege' Asgard was attacked and fell from the sky, Loki and Baldur died, then Asgard is attacked by a force of otherworldly enemies in `The World Eaters'. In the climactic fight, Thor split the World Tree Yggdrasill, causing a rift in reality, and Asgard is now haven to inhabitants from many of the other realms (dwarves, elves etc.) and Thor resurrected Loki as a child (no impact here, death is so cheap in comics it's not possible to take seriously anymore) and brought back Odin.

Now for the basic set up for this story In the wake of splitting the World Tree, Odin sends Thor and Sif into the aforementioned rift in reality, where they find the World Heart, a seed of the World Tree. Due to the item's immense cosmic power, it is sensed by the Silver Surfer, who seeks to take it from Asgard for Galactus, as it may forever end his hunger. This sets the stage for some absolutely epic fighting as Thor brawls with Surfer on Mars; Odin fights Galactus and other great moments. Yes, that's right, Asgard declares war on Galactus. Epic.

Oliver Coipel returns to stun with his fantastic artwork, and it looks just as great as his work during the acclaimed JMS run. The high scale premise here really gives Coipel a chance to cut loose for some fantastic scenes. Fraction delivers some great story moments, but a few problems keep me from declaring this book a 5/5. During the opening, Thor is given a glowing wound that is constantly mentioned but it never amounts to anything here it's just played for some pointless drama, and considering that it hardly seems to impede Thor from brawling it out with Silver Surfer or hammering Galactus through the head, it seems pointless.

Also, the religious elements courtesy of the `Pastor Mike' character detract from the book. This is epic cosmic godly warfare, not a commentary on religions (how can we believe in god if these Asgardians right next door are gods etc.). On the plus side, Fraction really delivers with the rest of the support cast Volstagg has some great humor bits to keep the scale of the main plot from going overboard, and Sif has far more to do here than she has thus far. Kid-Loki is cast as a sympathetic character here, so at least Fraction is making the most of the pointless death-resurrection cycle by giving us a new spin on the character.

Though it has a few problems, this is ultimately a great Thor story. The scale is grand, the action is great, the character moments are well done, and the art is phenomenal. Thor fans will want to have this in their collection.
  • My #Thor read-a-thon marches on with Matt Fraction & Olivier Coipel. This volume is a great read. My only complaint is that Thor somehow grows a beard from one page to another in the story mid-action. Whoops.
  • Fun story with an unexpected ending. Great art, some of the best I've seen in a marvel comic.
  • Great
  • This history remind me the classic adventure with John Buscema. Very good material. recomendo para os faz do deus do trovão.
  • Galactus goes to Asgard to find a seed that will satisfy his endless hunger, but the gods of Asgard, Thor and Odin won't give the seed without a fight to the end, there are suspenful battles, such as the batthe between the silver surfer, and thor and the cosmic battle between the celestial powers Galactus the devourer of worlds and Odin the all knowing and powerful god of Asgard, who is willing to bend the rules of space and time to defeat Galactus
  • Has adventures, great twists with Thor, Galatus, Odin and of course Loki scheming and actually trying to do the right thing. Awesome art by Copiel
