Photographing the Southwest Vol 1 Southern Utah 3rd Edition A Guide to the Natural Landmarks of Southern Utah Laurent Martrès 9780916189235 Books Reviews
- I purchased Photographing the Southwest, Volumes 1,2, and 3 for our RV trip to the Southwest so will leave this review for all three books for anyone considering purchasing one of them. For this book in particular, we spent three weeks in southern Utah, so went to a majority of the places discussed in the book. I rarely leave reviews but these books deserve reviews. I am an amateur photographer hoping to improve and travel with my husband in a 24-foot RV. Although I buy lots of travel guides for my when we travel, these guides were the best. Although not intended as travel guides necessarily, they were the best at providing us with detailed descriptions of the most interesting and beautiful natural places to go. On top of that, they provided great photography advice and, important for us, detailed information on how to get to each place, including information on how difficult it would be, such as dirt roads, so we could decide if our RV would make it or not. (There is even a chart in the back of each book that summarizes interest value, difficulty of access, etc.) I cannot overstate how much I love these books. They really are brilliant. My only disappointment is that the author has not done books for the entire country!
- This is an excellent series of books. Together or singly they are a great resource for touring the southwest, whether you are a serious photographer or just a lover of beautiful places and great hikes. I've used the printed versions for years and found them to be accurate and extremely helpful. Not detailed recipes for photos - a good thing in my book -although there is good general photography advice at the beginning of each book. Particularly valuable is the practical information about the best times of day for great light, and which lenses you may want to bring, for each destination. It is very handy now to be able to get these books in format. The quality of the photos is noticeably higher in the printed books, but the high quality of paper makes them a fairly heavy set to carry. So I'm happy to have both versions.
- These are the best photo guides available for explorers of the western states and beyond, part of the PhotoTripUSA series. Laurent's 4 volumes in the "Photographing the Southwest" series are filled with amazing photos and helpful information. An exceptional photographer in his own right, Martres tells how to get to each location, what makes a site special, and even when to expect the best conditions for taking pictures. The books are well-organized by state and region. Attractively printed with a very professional feel, the books also contain a thorough table of contents and index, and charts rating the sites by useful criteria including scenic value, photo interest, road difficulty and trail difficulty. Laurent has kept these books up to date with expanded versions, adding new sites and the latest information. No explorer of the Southwest who loves to capture nature's wonders should be without these excellent guidebooks!
- Excellent series (I have all 3 volumes). As a landscape photography enthusiast, this has been a huge time saver and resource for me to find the best locations, both iconic spots and lesser known areas. Would highly recommend to any outdoor photographer planning a trip to these areas.
- There are a number of updates to this fantastic guide that make it worthwhile to buy the newer version. I have been using These guides for the last 6 years and the updates are excellent in this guide. New locations, and location details are included. When I first bought them, they were my go-to books. Now I use them as idea starters and places to begin my scouting.
- We were planning a trip to southern Utah to go beyond the national parks and I happened across this book. IT IS AMAZING!! It took us to all sorts of great locations we wouldn't have known about otherwise plus gave some good tips for when and where to shoot some photos. Best travel book I've ever had!!
- Very thorough explanations and descriptions for a laundry list of photogenic sites to visit. I particularly like the matrix at the end of the book which shows a table of how picturesque a place is with other rating criteria (ease of access, time needed, etc). I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make the most out of their trip to the Southwest.
- One of the best photographic guides to the US southwest you can find. Tips for best time of day for lighting, shooting locations, and directions to some of the more obscure locations. (Note If you purchase an older version of this book, be aware that the exits on Interstate 70 in Utah were renumbered in 2004, so the numbers in the book may not match the numbers you see on the highway.)
